A few months ago, I was sitting in a car park in Sydney with a friend, having lunch at a local market when the phone rang.
It was my wife, who was looking to buy a couple of fresh fish from a supermarket in Melbourne.
She asked what the prices were, to which I responded, “Well, I guess you could say I’m a bit of a gourmet nutter.”
“What do you mean?
What do you want?”
The couple’s conversation was cut short when my wife told me, “I don’t eat meat.”
It was a moment of truth for me.
I had just recently discovered a new favourite food, and my wife was willing to eat what I was craving.
A few months later, she was doing the same thing at a market in Melbourne, and she told me to get in touch with her if I wanted to try her new favourite item.
I was surprised to hear she was on a vegan diet, as I’d always assumed meat was the only thing she’d eaten.
She’s not the only one.
“There are a lot of people who are going vegan who have never eaten meat before,” says Jenny Smith, author of The Vegetarian Cookbook and author of Meatless Mondays.
“They’re all looking for something that’s good for them, and that’s something that you’re not going to find in a supermarket.”
“There’s this misconception that there’s only one way to eat meat, but there’s really many ways to eat it,” says Smith.
“I’ve been a vegan for a while, and I’ve been in relationships with lots of vegans, but I still find myself looking for a different kind of food.”
There are vegan options everywhere, from tofu to salmon to beans, and even some vegan products like almond butter and almond milk, which are really good for you.
You want to find something that feels like it’s a good choice for you and it’s going to be good for your body. “
If you’re eating meat, there’s no point in trying anything else,” she says.
“You want to find something that feels like it’s a good choice for you and it’s going to be good for your body.
It’s not a substitute for meat.””
The only vegan products you can really rely on are vegan products that are organic, that are cruelty-free and they’re made in a way that doesn’t require any chemicals.”
Smith advises you check out the label before you buy to make sure you’re getting the best possible product.
“I recommend that people shop for their favourite vegan products online and get a product that’s made with animals in mind, rather than just one that looks like it comes from a vegan factory,” she explains.
“The idea is to try different things and see what you like.
It can be really empowering to find out that something is really vegan, rather a product you’re probably not going be able to find elsewhere.”
I started eating meat a few years ago, but as I started experimenting with vegetarian alternatives, I realised the truth of the myth.
I had never seen the word vegan in print before, so I asked my friends if they’d heard of it.
They were all surprised, and wondered if I was an animal lover.
I said I was.
They then suggested I check out some vegan food online and saw how it could be a great source of information.
I started shopping for vegan products from online sources, but then I found out that some vegan options were not vegetarian.
“Some people really don’t like animals, so they’ve put up a sticker or two saying that they’re vegan, but the truth is they’re not,” Smith says.
So, I started looking into the details of some of the products I’d come across online.
I also looked into a vegan food guide I found online and found it was full of information about meat, dairy and eggs.
I contacted a range to ask them if they had any vegan products, but they weren’t forthcoming.
I started going to the stores and checking out what I could find online, to see what my options were.
I realised there were a few products I could definitely buy that didn’t include any animals.
I tried some vegan foods on Amazon, and decided to go vegan myself.
I found vegan products at a range, but it was difficult to choose.
I’d already eaten meat once, and found the flavour and texture to be quite different from the vegan products I was looking for.
“It’s difficult to know what’s best for you, as you might not have the time or energy to do a lot more research before buying,” Smith explains.
Smith advises that you go vegan on a daily basis.
“A good way to start is to check out a range or book a vegan dinner party, or try some recipes from local cookbooks,” she advises.
“You might be surprised at what you can find. And if you
